Editor's Verdict:

Adobe Premiere Elements is a very powerful and intuitive home video editing suite. It is essentially a version of the professional level Premiere Elements aimed at home users who don't want to have to get involved with the real technical nitty gritty of producing a movie. It allows you to have as much control over the editing process as you want, while still making it easy to get good looking results quickly and easily. The latest version has a lot of improvements over previous ones and is definitely worth a look for anyone interested in home movie editing.

The first thing you will notice about Adobe Premiere Elements is the extremely stylish and intuitive user interface. To accommodate new users Adobe have included, along with the usual timeline style interface, a tool they call the sceneline. The sceneline is essentially a timeline, but at a higher level so that you can just drag and drop clips onto it to create a movie without worrying about exact timings. This works great if you want to just throw a few clips together and you can even drag and drop effects and scene transitions onto it, but to really get access to the power of Premiere Elements you will find yourself going down to the timeline level. The other option is to let the software edit a movie together automatically based on raw footage that you provide. It can automatically detect the best quality footage and, where scene changes occur,

then edit this together based on one of the preset themes that you can choose. The results of this vary, but for a quick home video it can often work quite well.

There are hundreds of different effects included with Adobe Premiere Elements which allow you to jazz up your home movies with professional looking results. Usually it is simply a case of dragging and dropping the effect then using some sliders to change the parameters until you get it the way you want it. This can even be done in real time as you preview your production on a second monitor. It is equally easy to apply more complex effects like background replacing and picture-in-picture effects; even novices will manage to add these with no problems.

Adobe Premiere Elements supports all the common video, image and audio formats around so that you can import content from almost any kind of device. You can also edit directly in high definition AVCHD format and Elements provides some of the smoothest and most responsive performances we have seen for this. You can also output video files in any type of format that suits, for example for YouTube or portable devices, as well as authoring professional looking DVD and Blu-Ray discs with menus.

To add a soundtrack to your movie Adobe Premiere Elements offers a few different options. If you are creating a photo slideshow, the application can automatically match the beat of a song you provide to the changes of slide or if you are editing a movie it can automatically match a soundtrack to it based on some preset music. If you want more control it is, of course, possible to edit the soundtrack directly using the up to 99 audio tracks provided.

Adobe Premiere Elements is a great way to begin learning how to edit and produce movies at home. It is powerful enough that you won't feel restricted once you know what you are doing, but easy enough to use that beginners can still get great results. Like most Adobe products a free trial is available after which you can purchase the full version at a very reasonable price given the functionality the software provides.
