Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 is the full professional level version of Adobe's video editing and production suite that includes all the extra bells and whistles the Elements version leaves out. While not quite as easy to pick up and jump into as Elements, the Pro version of Premiere, is extremely powerful and one of the most in-depth video editing applications we have looked at. It tightly integrates with other Adobe applications to ensure that your workflow is smooth from beginning to end.
Since the user interface for the previous edition of Adobe Premiere was widely praised for being extremely intuitive and easy to use, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 doesn't change anything too much. It certainly looks even slicker than before though, and Adobe have included a whole load of minor tweaks and improvements that have been requested by the user community. These should all go towards making the application even easier and more intuitive to use. The interface may look slightly daunting at first for beginners, but with a little effort it will quickly become apparent how finely tuned it is to helping you achieve common tasks quickly.
One of the most useful new additions to Adobe Premiere Pro CS 4 is the ability to search spoken dialogue in your footage to find a specific clip. The software can automatically translate the speech to text so that it can be searched quickly, which will be a welcome addition if you regularly work with large amounts of footage. The quality of the search results depend on the clarity of the dialogue to begin with and there is definite room for improvement in the translation to text, but this is certainly a promising feature.
Adobe Premiere CS4 benefits from even tighter integration with other Adobe products than previous versions. Specifically, support for Photoshop PSD files has been improved which now gives you advanced control over layers and blend modes. Included with Premiere comes OnLocation and Encore which are separate applications in themselves which help with other parts of the production process. OnLocation provides a powerful solution for monitoring and recording film to disk, while Encore provides industry leading tools for authoring DVD and Blu-Ray discs. Both are excellent applications and can really help in the overall workflow of producing a film.
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 is a very powerful video editing suite with too many features to count. However, many of these will only be of use to professional production teams working to tight deadlines. For many people, especially home users, it may be best to opt for the much cheaper Elements version which is easier to jump straight into, but doesn't offer quite as much control. Adobe Premiere Pro CS 4 has a high, but justified, price tag, but can be purchased as part of the Adobe Production suite which is much cheaper than buying each application individually.
