AVS Video Editor is a cheap and cheerful video editing tool that gives surprisingly good results. The application is easy to pick up and dive right into without learning any special skills or techniques which, along with its price tag, makes it ideal for beginners. Advanced users probably won't find enough complex features and functionality for their requirements, but AVS Video Editor is perfect for people who just want to have some fun.
AVS Video Editor has a fairly basic user interface, but this is no bad thing in an application like this. It makes it really easy to immediately see what is going on in your project and make the software do what you want. You can work with the storyboard for a high level view of the clips you are putting together or for more detail can work with the timeline directly. Much of the process has been reduced to just dragging and dropping clips and effects onto the timeline until you get the look that you want.
There are over 300 visual effects and scene transitions included with AVS Video Editor which should be more than enough to keep you (or the kids) entertained. The effects aren't quite as professional looking as some of the applications we have seen, but for throwing together a few home videos, they are easily good enough. They can be applied to either SD or HD footage which can be imported from a variety of different sources and although HD performance is noticeably slower than SD it isn't bad for such a low cost application. You can also achieve fairly complex picture-in-picture and chroma-key effects quite easily - although the results won't be quite as good as some of the more advanced tools on the market.
AVS Video Editor allows you to export your movie in a variety of different formats that can be suitable for the internet, mobile devices or a DVD or Blu-Ray disc. While the Video Editor application has some DVD authoring capabilities when you purchase a subscription to AVS you also get access to a wide range of other tools which includes a dedicated authoring tool capable of supporting HD. Many other useful tools are on offer, such as a media player, video converter, digital audio editor, disc copying tools and a few system utilities. These extras make a subscription to AVS really good value if you think you will have a use for the functionality they offer.
AVS Video Editor is a handy little video editing tool, but if you plan on doing any serious editing you will probably want to look for something a bit more upmarket. However, it is fun and easy to use and comes with a huge variety of extra applications that will more than likely come in useful at some point. We would recommend AVS Video Editor to anyone looking to try out some basic video editing and would like a few extra multimedia tools to boot.
