Edius NLE is a professional level non linear video editing system aimed for use in broadcasting or production houses. It is a solid and reliable application that does everything an editor would require from this type of software. The setup and licensing procedure is a bit convoluted with the inclusion of the license key on a USB dongle, but once installed most professionals should find Edius a breeze to use.
The user interface for Edius NLE is well designed and intuitive. Ideally you will want to have two monitors set up to get the most out of it or it can feel a bit squeezed, but everything is flexible so that you can arrange the tools on screen in a way best suited to how you work. All the keyboard shortcuts are fully customizable and it is actually possible to set them up to match other popular editing systems such as Final Cut and Avid. This makes it easy for anyone used to using a different application to immediately get to grips with Edius NLE.
Edius NLE performs well even when working with HD footage. The timeline allows you to mix any combination of SD and HD footage and apply effects and filters in real time. It is also very simple to alter the aspect ratios and resolutions of your final production. The software comes bundled with some decent effects packs as well as a load of stock footage and images that you can use. Both are pretty high quality and serve as a good starting point for your projects. The video enhancement tools are very powerful and allow advanced color correction for subtle improvement of your footage. In addition, there are some excellent chroma-keying tools on offer which are, again, very easy to use and provide professional quality results.
For maximum performance Edius NLE can be purchased as a turnkey solution whereby the software comes pre-installed on an approved workstation. Obviously this costs more than simply purchasing the software, but the extra performance can be well worth the money in the right situations. Although the manual and help facilities included with Edius NLE aren't great, they do suffice for getting you started. It is also possible to subscribe to online training courses offered by Grass Valley - the company who develop Edius.
Edius NLE is a pretty good quality, professional level editing system. Obviously, if you are looking for such a high end system it makes sense to look at some of the other options available - such as those from Avid. However, once installed Edius NLE should provide all the functionality you need in a professional editing system.
