Editor's Verdict:

Movavi Video Editor is a fairly average video editing tool that lacks a few features, but is surprisingly easy to use and does get the job done. It would be an OK choice for some beginners, but even then it is likely you would outgrow the software pretty soon. Perhaps the next version will bring it in line with some of the better applications around, but for the moment it should be possible to find a better editor for roughly the same price.

Movavi Video Editor does have its good points though. For basic video editing it works pretty well and even beginners should find it easy to pick up and use. The interface is well designed so that it's easy to see where all the controls are and what they do. It doesn't look quite as polished as some applications we have looked at, but has definitely had some work put into it. We particularly like the fact that you can have an unlimited number of tracks to work with, which can make things easier in complex projects.

It is in the more advanced video editing tasks where Movavi Video Editor doesn't quite step up to the mark. There is a decent range of visual effects and scene transitions included with the package, but not as many as other applications of a similar level offer. The automatic video enhancement tools do an average job of improving the quality of your footage, but again, we have seen better in other applications. We were also disappointed to see that Movavi Video Editor doesn't seem to provide any features which allow you to create picture-in-picture effects or do any sort of keying. However, on the plus side there is a built in screencast feature which we haven't seen in many other applications. This allows you to record what is happening on your computer screen and provide a voiceover as it happens. It's a useful feature if you want to perhaps demonstrate a problem on your computer, or create tutorial videos to post online.

When your project is finished, Movavi Video Editor allows you to output the final video file in a variety of formats suitable for different purposes. It is easy to get a file perfect for using online or on a mobile device. A slight letdown though is that, although you can burn a good quality file straight to DVD, there are no authoring tools to allow you to add menus and title screens. Most other video editing software provides at least some basic tools to allow you to do this. We should also point out that you can't work with HD footage or Blu-Ray discs.

Movavi Video Editor is a simple video editing application in need of a revision to bring it in line with the competition. The basic video editing facilities work fine but, with most applications now offering a wider variety of effects and the ability to work in HD, it is falling behind the times. For some better quality video editing tools have a look at some of the products in our top ten.
