Editor's Verdict:

Pinnacle Studio Plus is a fully featured, easy to use and great looking video editing suite. It is aimed at home users who want all the features and effects that a professional application can provide, but with inherent simplicity and ease of use. The standard version of Pinnacle Studio makes it into our top ten list in a respectable position and the Plus version contains all the same great features, but with the added benefits of full HD support and some advanced visual effects.

The user interface for Pinnacle Studio Plus has been designed very well from the outset and even newcomers to the world of video editing should have no trouble getting stuck in immediately. It is uncluttered so that new users don't get overwhelmed by the number of tools on offer, but everything you need to use can easily be found tucked neatly away in a menu somewhere. It splits editing a movie into 3 simple phases: capture, edit and make movie and you can easily flick between the three.

Editing your movie is probably the phase you will spend most of you time in bringing your project to perfection. The Pinnacle Montage feature is probably the easiest way for new users to do this as all you have to do is select the clips you want to use and the software will arrange them to a pre-made template of your choice. There is a good selection of templates included and more can be purchased in extras packs. For more control you can get right down to the timeline level and apply your own choice of filters, scene transitions and effects. The effects on offer are good quality and there are plenty to choose from so you don't always have to stick to the same format when editing your movies.

The major benefit of the Plus edition over the standard edition of Pinnacle Studio is that it fully supports HD footage. This is a welcome addition, and something that was obviously lacking from the standard edition. HD support makes no difference to the editing process and it is just as easy to import footage from your camcorder. Of course you can now also work with Blu-Ray discs to burn your movies to and fully author the menus for them. The other main addition to the plus version is the advanced visual effects it is possible to achieve within your movie. Easy to use picture-in-picture and chroma-keying tools have been included so that you can get some really professional looking results.

Pinnacle Studio is a very good video editing suite for home users. If you want to work with HD footage then you must go for the Plus or Ultimate editions of the software which cost slightly more than the standard edition. However, if you only want to work with SD video then we recommend going for the cheaper standard edition - which includes most of the same features minus HD support. For a full review of the standard version check out our top ten list.
