Roxio MyDVD is a combined DVD authoring and video editing tool aimed at the home user market. It is very simple to use and with some handy automatic tools built in so that even beginners can get right into producing good looking movies. More advanced users will find that it is lacking in some areas, such as the range of visual effects or the level of control which some of the tools provide, but all in all Roxio MyDVD is a reasonably priced and useful application.
The user interface for Roxio MyDVD isn't quite as highly polished as some of the applications we have looked at in this category. However, although it isn't quite as stylishly designed, the basic, uncluttered nature of the interface will appeal to many people. Everything is very clearly laid out and there aren't any annoying graphical effects that slow down performance and distract from getting on with your project. You can choose to work with the storyboard for a high level view of your movie or for more detail go right down to the timeline level.
There are a couple of different wizards included with Roxio MyDVD which can help speed up the process of creating your movie. The "CineMagic" wizard helps you select which clips to use from the footage you import based on a variety of parameters. You can then just add a soundtrack and select a style to automatically create a whole movie. In addition there is a slideshow wizard which can create full motion slideshows, with automatic panning and zooming effects, from your still photos. Anything you create with the wizards can, of course, be edited as much as you like until you get it perfect.
When your creations are complete Roxio MyDVD offers a few different ways of sharing them with the rest of the world. The easiest way is the one click upload button to YouTube, which does exactly what it says on the tin. You can also easily export a video file optimized for use on mobile devices. The most comprehensive feature, though, is the ability to author your own DVDs with fully customized titles and menus. There are some pre-made templates included and it's easy to edit these to your own liking. Roxio MyDVD also offers full support for HD video editing, but strangely does not let you burn or author Blu-Ray discs to burn it to. That means you are stuck burning your HD footage to DVD and you won't be able to fit very much on.
Roxio MyDVD is an easy to use video editing and DVD authoring tool. The tools provided are fairly basic, but they allow you to get the job done quickly and easily. The one downfall is that there is no support for Blu-Ray discs on which to burn any HD footage you work with. However, if you can put up with that flaw Roxio MyDVD isn't a bad choice for a video editing and authoring solution.
