Serif Movie Plus is an easy to use video editing application, with a nice looking user interface and a decent range of effects to jazz up your home movies. For a video editing application aimed at home users you still get a good level of control over your production so beginners won't quickly outgrow the application like they would some similar ones. Experienced users would be better off looking for a more advanced application that allows for even greater control, but beginner to intermediate users will get on fine with Serif Movie Plus.
The first thing you will notice on starting Serif Movie Plus is its clean, uncluttered and well presented user interface. It manages to keep a shiny modern look while not using too many graphical gimmicks to distract you from what you are doing. You can choose to work with the storyboard for a high level view of your production or delve into the timeline for more control. All the tools you need are easy to get to and most of the process can be carried out simply by dragging and dropping clips and effects. One thing we particularly liked was the effort Serif has put into the tutorials on how to use the application. There are lots of in depth "how to" lessons that can be opened alongside the application to help you accomplish common tasks.
Serif Movie Plus certainly doesn't lack in the visual effects department. The application includes lots of different filters and scene transitions that you can use in your movies straight out of the box, including some advanced techniques like chroma-keying. There are also numerous extra content packs that can be purchased directly from Serif and add lots of extra styles and effects to Movie Plus. The one thing we thought lacked slightly was the inclusion of some video enhancement tools to correct camera shake or alter the colours of a piece of video.
Serif Movie Plus allows you to burn your finished movie to DVD and author animated menus and titles for it. There is a selection of pre-made templates on offer which you can customize to your liking. One slight gripe we had, however, was that although you can work with and edit HD footage the application doesn't offer support for authoring Blu-Ray discs. This means you are limited to burning only small amounts of HD footage due to the lower capacity of DVDs.
Despite a couple of minor quibbles we had with it, Serif Movie Plus is a fairly good and very easy to use video editing tool. The price is perhaps slightly more than we would expect to pay for an application of this level, but anyone who is already familiar with other Serif products will probably be happy to pay it.
