Sony's Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition makes it into our top ten for a second time. This time it is without the extra Pro Pack which knocks a bit off the price and makes it even better value for money. There are only a few differences between the version with the Pro Pack and this one without, so unless you really need the extra features you could save yourself a bit of cash by opting for this cheaper version.
The interface for Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition is based around a very well designed timeline that makes it easy to see how your production is fitting together. The easy to use drag and drop interface allows you to chop up movie clips and fit them together with a soundtrack with the minimum of fuss. At first the interface may seem a bit daunting as there is a lot of information to take in at once, but it just takes a little bit of effort to become familiar with it and you will never look back. To help you learn the interface Sony includes a library of "Show Me How" tutorials that take you through common tasks step by step. These are really easy to follow and a great way to begin learning how to use the program.
Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition includes numerous tools for restoring video clips and adding special effects. There are professional quality tools for color correction to enhance washed out footage and image correction tools to remove red-eye from photos. In the special effects department there are loads of included 2D and 3D effects to allow you to create professional looking titles and scene transitions, as well as over 20 real time DirectX audio effects. This is one of the areas of the application that you do get extra with if you go for the more expensive Pro Pack version. The Pro Pack includes quite a few extra effects, but for beginners especially this version contains more than enough to keep things interesting.
Like any worthwhile movie editing suite Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition supports almost any type of common video file you can think of so that you can include clips from anywhere. It is easy to work with both HD and standard quality in the same project and you can even work directly in Sony's AVCHD format imported from your digital video camera. On the audio side of things the application supports multichannel (5.1) source files from your camcorder and includes mixing and panning tools to create DVD soundtracks.
Your finished videos can be burned to DVD using the included DVD Architect application. This lets you create professional looking DVDs with menus and title screens. With the Pro Pack version you would also get Soundforge Audio Studio included to help with soundtrack creation and digital audio editing, but with the standard version this is lacking. However, this is ideal if you are already familiar with a different audio editing application that you want to use.
Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition is an excellent product and will have you making professional looking movies in no time. This edition without the Pro Pack is slightly cheaper but doesn't include the extra effects pack or Soundforge Audio Studio. However, these are the only differences and may not be important to some people. We say go for the best version you can afford because it's always fun to have a few extra effects to play with!
