Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro Pack is a powerful home video editing suite which delivers professional quality results. This is the top end of Sony's home studio range, one step below their industry level application, and has all the extra bells and whistles you would expect. The user interface is great to use and allows even relative novices to create professional looking videos. This is our number two product and only narrowly missed out on the top spot, but there isn't much to choose between this and our number one rated product.
The user interface for Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro Pack is based around the standard timeline representation that all video editing suites use. At first the layout and amount of information on the screen looks quite daunting, with controls all over the place, strange looking coloured graphs and various read outs popping up. However, after following a couple of the helpful "Show Me How" tutorials that are included, you will soon realise how intuitive it all is and what everything means. Although the interface is perhaps not as friendly to first time users as some of the products we have looked at, those who put a little bit of effort into learning how to use it will be rewarded by the wealth of features it offers.
In terms of editing, Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro Pack gives you 4 video tracks and 4 audio tracks to play with. This is slightly less than our number one product, but should still be enough for most projects. Video effects and transitions can easily be added to the timeline and previewed in real time - in full screen if you have a second monitor. Lots of other settings and parameters can also be altered in real time to let you tweak them until they are just right.
As you would expect from a top class home studio product, Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro Pack supports a wide variety of different file types and input capturing. HD footage can be edited directly in Sony's AVCHD format - which not many other applications offer and can easily be captured from a DV camera. You can also import multichannel (5.1) source files directly from your camera and work with them in the editor. As well as these standout features Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro Pack also supports most standard audio, video and image formats so that you can add any kind of media to your movie.
The Pro Pack in the title means that this version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum comes bundled with a large library of extra video effects as well as Sony Soundforge Audio Studio which helps you to create the audio for your video. This is a product which deserves a review in itself, but can be summed up as an excellent digital audio editor which will come in very handy for producing top quality sound for your videos.
The other product bundled with all versions of Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro is Sony DVD Architect. This is an easy to use tool which lets you directly import the video files you have been working with to author them to DVD. The software lets you create DVD introductions and interactive menus from a variety of pre-made templates or you can create your own from scratch. The one downside is that there is no support for Blu-Ray disc burning from DVD Architect, however, you can burn directly to Blu-Ray from within Movie Studio.
Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro Pack is an excellent package for all your home studio requirements. The bundled Audio Studio and DVD Architect applications make it excellent value and provide all the tools you need to create professional looking movies. The slight setbacks which mean this application misses out on our top spot are the limited number of video and audio tracks and the lack of Blu-Ray support from DVD Architect. If you can overlook these two minor things then Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro Pack is one of the best home movie studio suites on the market.
