Sony Vegas Movie Studio is an excellent quality video editing application which can provide great results for beginners and more advanced users alike. The Platinum version of this software sits well up in our top ten list of video editing applications and the standard version is almost as good with just a few things cut out compared to the Platinum. Both versions are very reasonably priced so read on to decide which is best for you.
One of the things we like most about Sony Vegas Movie Studio is that it is easily accessible for new users, but packs enough functionality so that you don't outgrow the application when you learn a bit more about the video editing process. Some applications can simplify things too much so that the user loses control over their production, but Sony manages to find a happy medium. This is reflected in the well designed interface that at first might look slightly complex, but you soon find that you don't need to bother about the more advanced features if you don't want to. There is also an excellent selection of tutorials included in the application - another thing many other developers forget about.
All of the features you would expect from a good home video editing suite are included with Sony Vegas Movie Studio. There is an excellent wizard which will almost fully automatically choose the best scenes from your raw footage and edit them together into a great looking movie. Included with the application is a huge library of visual effects and scene transitions that you can apply to your projects just by dragging and dropping. There are also around 360 music tracks to choose from to add a soundtrack to your movie, and these can be edited with the comprehensive digital audio editing tools.
The main difference between the standard version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio and the Platinum version is the capacity to handle HD footage. With the standard version you can only work in standard definition and burn to DVD discs. However, the included DVD Architect software does a great job of allowing you to create animated titles for your DVDs and burn them easily. While many users will need the extra HD functionality, if you don't plan on using it then you can save a few dollars by opting for the standard version.
Sony Vegas Movie studio is an excellent choice of video editing application for any level of home user. Beginners won't be too overwhelmed with complexity while more advanced users will find all the tools they need to make a great movie. The Platinum and Pro Pack versions of the software offer extra content and HD capabilities, but not that much more in the way of functionality so the standard version is great value for money.
